Find Five-July 2009

Find five and tell them that it was the Republican Party that passed the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

The 14th Amendment granted citizenship to
former slaves.

It also defines citizenship and protects people's civil and political rights from infringement by any state, and, over time, it has been interpreted to grant a number of rights to people living in the United States.

Republicans believed this amendment was necessary oven though they had just passed the Civil Rights Act of 1866 which granted citizenship to former slaves. Congressional Republicans were afraid that the Supreme Court would rule the Civil Rights Act unconstitutional or at some
time in the future, Congress might alter it by a simple majority vote. The Civil Rights Law of 1866 guaranteed African-Americans "full and equal benefit of all laws and proceedings for the security of person and property, as is enjoyed by white citizens." Republicans thereby granted African-Americans the right to own property, engage in business, sign contracts and file lawsuits. (Michael Zak- http://grandoldpartisan.typepad.com) Making sure that these rights would never be denied, Republicans worked to pass the Fourteenth Amendment, and it was ratified on July 9, 1868.
