Find Five-August 2009

Find five and tell them that it was the Republican Party that passed the 15th Amendment to the Constitution.

The Fifteenth Amendment granted former slaves
the right to vote.

The Fifteenth Amendment was ratified on February 3, 1870, and it prohibits each government in the United States from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's race, color, or previous condition of servitude" (i.e., slavery).

The first African American to vote after the adoption of this amendment was Thomas Mundy Peterson (1824- 1904) who cast his ballot in a school board election being held in Perth Amboy, New Jersey on March 31, 1870. He was born in Metuchen, New Jersey to parents who had been slaves owned by the Mundy family. He was a school custodian in Perth Amboy. Active in the Republican Party, he became the city's first African-American to hold elected office, on the Middlesex County Commission. He was also the city's first African American person to serve on a jury. Decades later, the school where Peterson had worked was renamed after him. In New Jersey, March 31st is annually celebrated as Thomas Mundy Peterson Day in recognition of his historic vote. (www.npl.org)
